Gay Asians homes plea

HOMES are desperately needed for persecuted gay and lesbian Asian teenagers in the Greater Manchester area claim a campaign group.
The Alberty Kennedy Trust is urging gay and lesbian adults to step forward and offer lodgings and care to youngsters in the Asian community who are in crisis over their sexuality. Because of widespread hatred of homosexuality in the Asian community the trust, named after a gay teenager murdered in Manchester, say many of these youngsters end up on the streets or suffering a living hell at home. They have launched a drive to recruit homosexual carers to take the teenagers in and offer them support.
Said a spokeswoman for the Trust: "Because of attitudes in the Asian community when these kids are either found out, or come out, they either leave home or live in an atmosphere very hostile to their sexuality. We want to recruit gay or lesbian carers to foster these children and offer them a place. We appreciate there are many heterosexual individuals or couples who may be quite prepared to care for gay or lesbian Asians but we believe they will not bring the same understanding of the problems they face as gay or lesbian teenagers. After all you do not put a stray cat in a dogs home."
The spokeswoman said the carers were rigorously vetted by police and social services to make sure they were not potential abusers.
The Albert Kennedy Trust was named after a 16-year-old gay boy who became homeless in Manchester due to his sexually and was murdered by a homophobic killer.
Media tycoon, Waheed Alli, became the Trust's first patron in May 2002.
