Weighing-up depression

1/ 1/2003

ASIAN women who have just had babies will be 'weighed' for depression under a new system introduced in Rochdale.

They will be given weights with symbols depicting aspects of their lives. For example one weight will display a picture of money. If the mother feels positive about her financial situation she will place it on the positive side of the scales. If she feels worried, the weight will go on the negative side.

The method will give health workers a simple visual way of estimating whether the mother is suffering from post-natal depression. It replaces a long questionnaire which many Asian women found difficult to read and answer.

A competition was launched to select the name of the method. The winner Umber Mohsin came up with Dhoop Chaon which stands for sun and shade. She received her prize of a meal for two at Karims Restaurant in Middleton at an Eid Party organised by Sure Start.
