Comic strip heroines

1/ 1/2003

TWO Asian schoolgirls are set to become comic super heroes.

They are both featured in a specially commissioned comic book about Asian and black people visiting art galleries and museums in Greater Manchester.

In the comic book 'What in the World?' Oulder Hill High pupil Heena Rana tells how she was part of a Touchstones history project at Rochdale Museum. The 11-year-old was chosen for the comic book after winning a competition.

She said: "We had to draw toys which we thought children would play with in 2050. I won the competition with a few other people and the teacher chose me to be part of the comic book."

In Oldham Kreena Mistry, also 11, attended the launch of Oldham's new art gallery. Her strip cartoon features her dancing before guests.

The comic book's aim is to break down cultural barriers to get more Asian's, blacks and other ethnic minorities to visit Greater Manchester free galleries and museums.

Librarian Katherine de Lisle, from Whitworth Art Gallery near Manchester's curry mile, said: "The comic book features some wonderful stories and serves to highlight the wealth of material that can be seen in our museums and galleries. I hope it will inspire people to visit somewhere new."
