Millennium centre open

FOUNDING members of the Oldham Bangladeshi Association officially launched the new Millennium Cultural Centre.
Community elders Mabaswir Khan and Maqsud Ali were specially invited by organisers of the event to cut the ribbon and declare the £3.5 million centre open.
The ceremony was watched by local residents and invited guests including the Mayor Councillor Riaz Ahmad and the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh Mizanur Rahman.
The centre took two years to build and is located in the heart of the town's Bangladeshi community. It features a sports hall, computer suite and a kitchen. Local organisations including the Westwood and Coldhurst Women's Association and the Oldham Bangladeshi Youth Association will be based there.
At the opening Councillor Ahmad said: "I want to pay tribute to all the people who worked together to bring about this centre. The community as shown that by working together you can achieve your dreams. The council could not have developed the centre on its own."
Local councillor Abdul Jabbar added: "Mr Khan and Mr Ali were the founder members of OBA. They have spent years working for the better of the community and they are now seeing the fruits of their labour. This is a fantastic building, it has fantastic facilities that we can all be proud of. This building should be used by all members of the community."
