Ice-breaker officers have Urdu ambitions

1/ 2/2003

A GROUP of police officers may soon know the Urdu for phrases like 'evening all' and perhaps even 'you're nicked'.

They have volunteered for a 15-week course in the language lead by college lecturer Naheed Siddique. The officers, from Elizabeth Singer Police Station, West Didsbury hope the course will increase their understanding of the Asian community.

Said community affairs inspector Peter Foster: "Of course we do not expect them to be fluent in Urdu after 15 weeks but they will be able to master enough phrases to break the ice with the Asian community. I am sure the effort which they are making will be welcomed by everyone. It forms part of the Greater Manchester Police's on-going campaign to combat racism and curb anti-racist incidents."
