Hard luck con cash was spent on drugs

28/ 7/2003

A ROCHDALE man who preyed on decent members of the public to fund his drugs habit was sent to prison for a total of three months.
District judge David Tapp, said Mohammed Shakeel had "conned" people into giving him cash on the basis of a hard luck story in which he claimed he needed money desperately for petrol to get to Nottingham. In fact the 32-year-old used it to buy drugs.
Shakeel, of Lobley Close, Smallbridge, admitted two offences of deception to obtain cash from members of the public dishonestly and asked for six further similar offences to be taken into consideration. He also admitted a further charge of stealing an answering machine from Questworld.
The court heard that Shakeel cadged the money by claiming he desperately needed petrol to get to Nottingham. In one case he obtained £25.
A hard luck story he gave to one pensioner resulted in a £5 donation.
The court heard that Shakeel had been subject to three community orders and that he had also failed to answer bail.
He lives in sad circumstances on his own and had drug difficulties.
The judge told Shakeel: "Other people cannot help you with this and it's down to you in future to do something yourself about your problems."
