A Manchester doctor is hoping to raise health awareness in the
Asian community through a new organisation.
Dr Abbas Abidi has set up the national British ethnic health
awareness foundation (BEHAF) based in Manchester which will tackle
the lack of communication between Asians and health
organisations.
An author of bilingual health books, Dr Abidi said Asians and other
ethnic minorities are not getting the right health information
because of language barriers and this often leads to people
suffering pain and illness unnecessarily.
He said: "Because many people do not speak English, including many
asylum seekers, they do not have the confidence to seek out advice
and act upon it.
"This is why I wanted to set up this organisation where we can give
advice in all matters of health in various community languages
which includes English, Urdu and Punjabi."
The organisation will have its own website and will hold monthly
health seminars in community centres where they hope residents will
come to speak about their health needs.
Added Dr Abidi: "I have been actively promoting health awareness in
our communities for many years. This lead me to write my first Urdu
medical healthcare book called "Solution to common health
issues."
"I feel it is very important that people have access to the right
information for their own benefit."
