Firep prank nearly cost prison

29/ 8/2003

A STUDENT who called out the fire brigade unnecessarily could have gone to prison when he appeared before Rochdale magistrates for making a false alarm fire call.
Mohammed Mujahid Bilal Khan, aged 18, of Clifford Street, Rochdale, had admitted the offence at an earlier hearing and the case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to include all options for consideration including jail.
After hearing that Khan was a person of previous good character and regretted making the call, the bench decided instead of imprisoning him to make him subject to a community punishment order for 180 hours.
He was ordered to pay £35 court costs and was again reminded by the bench that giving a false alarm to any branch of the emergency services which diverted them from somewhere else where they were really needed was so serious prison was an option magistrates had to consider.
The court had heard that a 999 call was made to Rochdale Fire Brigade from outside the canteen of Hopwood Hall College in Middleton .
The building services manager at the college was able to replay a video tape which pinpointed Khan as the person making that call at the time.
Khan was recognised and later arrested.
Khan fully admitted making the call and expressed remorse.
