Purity and peace in the temple of marble

THE latest
addition to Greater Manchester flourishing multi-cultural religious
life is a magnificent white marble Jain Temple.
Hundreds of worshipers from the 500-strong Jain community gasped in wonder as the temple doors were opened officially for the first time.
The temple on Stockport Road, Longsight, Manchester was constructed specialist craftsmen and engravers flown in from India.
It contain seven Jain deities and will be the centrepiece of the Jain Community Centre which includes a 600-seater auditorium and a sports area.
Temple officials hope it will become a base for community unity and that it will play an important role in bringing together different faiths across the city.
Said spokesman Kiran Mehta: "There is really nothing like this anywhere else inn the country.
"The temple breaths purity and is a stunning addition to Manchester's architectural and cultural heritage.
"There are 30,000 Jains living in the UK alone and this temple iss the most significant in the north.
"Our religion is 2,000 years old and is based on non-violence, peace and a non materialistric life style.
"The emphasis of the temple and community centre is multi-culturalism and unity. We hold services every Sunday bewtween 7pm and 8pm and all are welcome."
The temple cost £100,000 to build - paid for by a wealthy Jain religious leader in India. The community centre cost a further £1.2 million, money raised by the Jain community and through the lottery.
