WHAT is the Urdu or Bengali equivalent of the scouting slogan
Did, Dib, Dib?
It may soon become an issue because the Islamic Scouting movement
is about to be launched and North West Asian youngsters are being
urged to join.
The new movement hopes to attract Muslim boys and girls between the
ages of six and 14. Organisers are collaborating with the
mainstream British scouting movement and hope to affiliate as a
section to the organsiation formed by colonial soldier Baden
Powell.
One of the founders of the new movement is Asmal Masroor, aged 31,
who was a scout from the age of 16 to 25.
He said: "I loved the scouts and their traditions.They have a lot
to offer Muslim kids but its overwhelming Christian basis and its
emphasis on British history and the tradition of empire is not
entirely appropriate for Muslims.
"We have the Young Muslim movement but this is for people of 14 and
above. There is an organisational vacuum below that which we want
to fill."
Mr Masroor said the rules on dress would be fairly relaxed.
"For girls especially, a Muslim dress code does not really apply
until they are over 14.
"We will be doing the usual badges with some added on, for example
a henna badge for girls.
"One of the immediate projects is a time-line we want troupes to
create which will trace human history from Adam, the first man made
by God, through the great prophets, which we often share with
Christianity and other religions, right up to the present day. We
think the movement has great potential."
The Islamic Scouts of Britain is expected to attract 3,000
Muslims.
