Butcher fined over minced hand horror

A BUTCHER shop worker had his hand minced after a safety guard
had been partly removed to speed-up production.
The man responsible for the horrific accident, halal butcher Zafar
Iqbal, has been fined £1,100 after pleading guilty to three
breeches of the health and safety laws.
Mr Iqbal operated a butchery franchise within Manchester Superstore
on Clarendon Road, Whalley Range, Manchester.
He employed Mohammed Sabir, then 25, who had recently arrived in
the UK from Pakistan after marrying a local girl.
Manchester Crown Court heard that while he was feeding meat into
the machine Mr Sabir's right hand was sucked inside.
Within seconds it was reduced to a bloody stump.
After he arrived by emergency ambulance at Wythenshawe Hospital
surgeons dashed back to the shop to see if any fingers could be
retrieved but they were too badly mangled to be saved.
When Manchester City Council safety inspectors visited the shop
they found that the aluminium guard which should have stopped
anyone's hand from coming near to a worm screw and cutting blades
inside the machine had been partly hacksawed away.
They also found a band saw used for cutting meat did not have a
suitable guard fitted to it and they discovered a number of
dangerous electrical faults.
They told the court that Mr Iqbal had failed to carry out a risk
assessment survey which should have identified all these
faults.
As a result of the accident and investigation, safety officers will
be visiting all butchers shops in the City to make sure all meat
cutting equipment is safe.
Just days after the accident Mr Sabir told Asian News that he had
been given no training before using the machine.
Doctors were hoping to give him a mechanical hand.
At the time said he had no complaints against Mr Iqbal and would
not be seeking compensation.
