Eid means thieves
AS North West Muslims prepare for Eid celebrations police are warning families to be on guard against thieves who are targeting Asian households for jewellery.
Police report a series of burglaries in homes in Burnage, Stockport and Withington where large amount of gold jewellery has been stolen.
The thefts, which usually occur during the day or early evening, rose recently to around one per day.
Asian families are being targeted because criminals realise women often bring out all their jewellery - mainly bright gold - ready to wear over Eid-ul-Fitre.
The thieves may offered the gold for sale elsewhere or melting it down.
Detective Constable David McCullah from Elizabeth Slinger Road CID said: "The burglaries are normally happening just after the family has left the house, and are usually committed during the day or early evening.
"Residents need to be vigilant and if they see anyone acting suspiciously to contact police.
"Much of the jewellery which has been stolen is not only valuable but has great sentimental value. Many women have had their wedding gold stolen."
Anyone with information about the burglaries or the thieves is asked to contact the CID on 0161 856 6115 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
