Burnt for beauty
Shelina Begum19/12/2003
A MANCHESTER woman fears she is scarred for life after a henna
design burned into her skin.
Razna Bi, aged 23, had her right hand decorated with what she
thought was natural substance by a henna artist who had set up a
stall outside a shop on Wilmslow Road.
It was the day before Eid and Razna joined a queue of women waiting
to have their hands decorated.
She had her palms and the back of her hand hennad in a simple
pattern. She noticed many other women had their hands and forearms
decorated with intricate designs.
As she walked home Razna began to feel a burning and itchy
sensation on her hand.
By the time she reached her home in Burnage her hand was swollen
and the burning sensation was even worse.
Razna washed off the henna and noticed that the skin underneath had
burnt badly.
Her sister-in-law, who also had the henna treatment, suffered the
same injuries.
Said Razna: "I'm so glad I only decided to get a simple pattern,
but there were some women who had intricate designs all over the
back and front of their hands and arms. They must also have
suffered far worse than we did.
"The artist was an Asian man in his 30s and he asked me if I was
allergic to anything. I told him I wasn't.
"He then said if anything happens it would not be his
responsibility.
"But nobody really took notice of what he was saying because we all
thought it was only henna, what harm could it do.
"Five minutes after I had my design done my hands felt like they
were on fire. After I washed the henna off my skin was left burnt
and bleeding .
"The next Eid is less than two months away and these henna artists
will be out again. Women should avoid them and should buy the
natural henna or go to a qualified beautician."
Earlier this year Manchester Council trading standards officers
issued a warning about henna treatments that involved mixing a hair
dye with henna, a natural substance which comes form a plant.
They warned women off two henna artists on Wilmslow Road who were
using a Japanese hair dye called Begim powder hair colour after one
victim was burned so badly she had to be treated in hospital.
