Youth drug scourge fuels Hyde crime
19/12/2003
ASIAN residents in Hyde are warning the local communities to be
on guard for burglars after more than ten homes have been broken
into.
Residents fear the break-ins are being committed by youths to fund
drug habits.
Mr Mizan of the Hyde Bangladeshi Welfare Association said the
thieves are targeting homes where they know large amounts of cash,
jewellry and expensive items are being kept.
He said: "Asian households are a prime target because many women
tend to keep gold jewellry which these youths may be looking for as
they will be able to get a lot of money for it.
"Hyde has always been fairly quiet town, but recently there's been
these waves of break-ins and we think it's because these youngsters
are trying to fund their drug habits as there are more young people
in both the Asian and white communities who are taking drugs.
"It is a huge concern for the community who are all on their guard
now."
Mr Mizan and other residents have been in meetings with the local
police who have promised to put more officers on the streets.
Local residents have been told to bank large amounts of cash and
valuables and make sure all doors and windows are kept closed and
locked.
Added Mr Mizan: "The root of the problem is drugs and we as a
community need to tackle this problem.
"Parents from the different communities in Hyde and other towns in
Tameside should look out for signs of any drug use in their
children.
"If they feel that their teenage son or daughter are taking drugs
then they should try and help.
"We all need to work together if we are to tackle the problems that
is now facing Hyde.
"The Hyde Welfare Association will be holding a seminar on drugs in
the near future.
"People living in Hyde and nearby towns are welcome to come to the
seminar so we can address the issues and help our youths."
