Wedding trip tragedy numbs community
19/12/2003
A SHOPPING trip for a family wedding ended in tragedy when a
Manchester mum-of-three and her brother-in-law died in a horrific
motorway accident.
Nabeela Rahman, 30, and Asif Akram Mir, 26, died instantly when the
car they were travelling in collided with a 4x4 vehicle, which had
ploughed through the motorway's central reservation.
The driver of the Mercedes car in which they were passengers was
Nabeela's husband Jhangir Akram, who is a well-known Manchester
jeweller.
He suffered three broken ribs and is now recovering at home in
Crumpsall, Manchester.
Nabeela was asleep in the back of the Mercedes when it was involved
in the collision with the vehicle on the M40 in Oxfordshire on
Sunday morning.
The tragedy occurred just before Eid and turned what should have
been family celebrations into mourning the loss of the pair.
Her brother Ajaz Ahmed, 38, an electrician, said the deaths had
rocked the community.
He said: "They were going to a wedding in Kashmir and were
travelling down to London for some shopping.
"They were both extremely hardworking and honest people. The
devastation this has left will be extremely hard to
overcome."
The driver of the white Ssangyong 4x4 vehicle involved in the
crash, a 45-year-old man from Shropshire, suffered minor injuries
and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving
and has been bailed by police pending further inquiries.
Asif was a partner with his brother at Jhangir Jewellers and both
lived together with their wives, children and other family members
in Peakdale Avenue, Crumpsall.
Asif, who was born and raised in Kashmir, was a skilled jeweller
married to Aneela the mother of his daughter Hira, four.
Nabeela, who was married to Jhangir for 11 years, was a full time
mum to their three children Zaib Rurhmoar, 10, Saira Manoor, seven,
and Adil Mir, one, and she also cared for her elderly mother.
She attended Whalley Range High School for Girls and Temple Junior
School before meeting her future husband.
