GREATER Manchester Police say they are "on target" over ethnic
minority recruitment.
The biggest recruiting drive in the GMP's history has just pushed
the number of officers to 8000 for the first time.
In all around 900 new officers have joined the force in a year. An
ethnic breakdown of the recruits has yet to be published but a GMP
spokeswoman said the organisation was satisfied with its intake of
black and Asian officers.
"We are still examining the results and hope to publish details
next month but from a preliminary investigation we are on target
with ethnic minority recruiting," she said.
Chief Constable Michael Todd (picture above with recruit Laura
Nagulapalli) visited the force's Sedgley Park training school to
welcome the 8000th recruit.
He told 110 new officers that they were about to embark on a great
career.
He said: "When we first launched project 8000 in March last year
there was a great deal of scepticism. People questioned whether we
could really recruit over 900 officers within a year. Now for the
first time in GMP's history, we have 8000 officers. This is a
special time."
He added: "From this moment on you will be training to perform a
crucial role, fighting crime and protecting people. You could be
the new Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police. The world is
in your hands."
One of the new recruits, Malasian-born Laura Nagulapalli, a former
model, said she always wanted to be a police officer.
She said: "I have done lots of things that I have really enjoyed
and seen lots of fantastic parts of the world, but I always wanted
a career, not just a job and I am really pleased. I am ambitious
and my ideal would be to work for the mounted unit."
