Accrington body parts hunt as son-in-law faces murder trial
27/ 2/2004
POLICE are searching for the body parts of a mother-of-six after
her son-in-law was charged with her murder.
Mohammed Arshad, aged 36, is accused of murdering Zainab Begum who
disappeared over six weeks ago. His brother, 37-year-old Mohammed
Khan, is accused of helping to dispose of her body parts.
Police have searched Mrs Begum's home at Queens Road West,
Accrington and the Millennium takeaway in Church Street,
Accrington, owned by Arshad.
As the grisly hunt continued one of Mrs Begum's daughters,
31-year-old college lecturer Samina Amin said: "People can only
imagine what we are going through and all we can do is pray for my
mother and her spirit.
"The police have let us know what we need to know and we are
content to just leave the case in their hands."
Samina and her other sisters are being helped by police family
liaison officers.
The managing director of Holland's Pies, Graham March, said police
had visited the factory to question Arshad who works in the meat
processing department.
He said: "They searched his locker but not the rest of the factory.
Production hasn't been affected at all. The police have told us
they don't need us anymore."
He added Arshad had been "an OK" worker who kept himself to
himself.
Arshad and Khan, who both live in Crumpsall, Manchester, have
appeared in court and are remanded in jail awaiting a crown court
trial in Preston.
Mrs Begum went missing on 13 January. Her youngest daughter Neelam
Sher, aged 14 last saw her when she left for school. When she
returned her mother was not there.
Police undertook a forensic examination of her home and what they
found led to the launch of the murder investigation.
Detective Inspector Jim Elston said: "The search for Zainab Begum's
body is continuing. There are a number of avenues of inquiry that
we are still looking into and we will continue until all of these
have been exhausted."
