Cheetham Asians to face social revolution
27/ 2/2004
ONE of Manchester's most densely populated Asian area is about
to experience a social transformation.
Cheetham Hill is a place of tightly packed terraces solidly in the
Coronation Street era - not immediately obvious as a venue for
young, rising city dwellers.
But this will begin to change by summer as the first phase of
Manchester's biggest ever housing development comes on
stream.
Even before one home has been completed the first phase of the new
Green Quarter has sold out.
Eventually the scheme will have 1,500 homes, built in 10 blocks on
a seven-acre site off Cheetham Hill Road.
The area is so vast a huge landscaped boulevard running through it
will be the width of Deansgate.
The £130m investment by Crosby Homes is seen as a key piece of the
masterplan to spread the boundaries of the city centre.
Manchester city council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein said:
"What we are seeing for the first time in generations are the first
steps in extending the boundaries to north Manchester."
Andrew Brady, regional chairman of Crosby Homes, said: "Over the
next five years we will be creating an entirely new prospect from a
once-derelict wasteland, and, in doing so open up a wealth of
opportunities for people to live in what will become one of the
most thriving residential areas of the city."
The company says the first phase of Green Quarter has sold out to a
mix of owner-occupiers and investors. Eight of the apartments are
said to have been bought by people from Hong Kong.
The second phase goes on sale today, with a one-bedroom apartment
selling for £109,000 and a two-bedroom from £145,000 with car
parking £18,000 extra.
Just half a mile up the road from the new mini-city are scores of
Asian shops and businesses who could see business rocket as they
gain hundreds of new, adventurous customers.
