Warning on cancer risk pickles

26/ 3/2004

OLDHAM food safety officers have made new warnings over a range of pickles that could increase the risk of cancer.
They say six types of Pran Naga Pickles should be added to an earlier type that should not be eaten.
The safety officers want Pran's mango pickle, olive pickle, mixed pickle, satkara (citrus) pickle, lemon pickle and garlic pickle removed from the shelves.
They are sold in 300g or 400g glass jars with a screw top lids. The labels are usually green with red and white lettering with a picture of the pickle contained in the jar.
The pickles have been found to contain the food colouring, Sudan 1, which is carcinogenic and banned from food use.
