WHY DID HE DIE?
Steve Hammond28/ 6/2004
A MAN is demanding an inquiry into how his brother came to die
after being 'restrained' in a psychiatric unit.
Sarfraz Ayub was told that his brother Azrar became "unwell" at the
Edenfield Centre in Prestwich and had to be "restrained" by four
staff - two men and two women.
He was told that 24-year-old Azrar was then placed in an isolation
room where he died.
Sarfraz said hours later when he identified his brother's body
there was serious bruising and cuts on his face.
Said Sarfraz of New Road, Oldham: "I and friends who knew Azrar are
utterly devastated. We want to know how he got these injuries and
came to die but we can't get any details from the medical staff. We
believe his death is suspicious."
Former nursery worker Azrar had been an in-patient at the Edenfield
centre for the last five years after he developed serious mental
problems including paranoia.
Sarfraz said he had never been violent and recently had been "100
per cent better".
"He was even talking of leaving the centre and getting married,"
said Sarfraz.
"On the Friday he died he rang me as usual in the morning and asked
if I was going up to se him. He sounded great. He asked me to bring
some curry, tobacco and crisps."
But when Sarfraz visited with friends at 8pm that same night they
were kept waiting in reception for 15 minutes and then told they
could not see Azrar because he was unwell.
They asked for details of his condition but were told to ring staff
on his ward.
Sarfraz attempted to ring several times but each time was "fobbed
off".
"We just could not get any information. I went to the mosque and
later returned home. There was a message from a doctor on my
answering machine asking me to ring him.
"I did and he said I had better sit down because he had some
terrible news and he told me my brother had died.
"I was shattered and asked him for details. He asked me to come and
see him"
Sarfraz returned to the centre with friends in the early hours of
Saturday morning. The doctor was present with two senior
staff.
"They told me Azrar had been unwell and had to be restrained by
four people and that then he had been placed in the isolation room
and that he had died there at about 10 pm.
"We were not allowed to see the body until 3pm later that day and
that's when we discovered the injuries. We have been ringing the
centre since but no-one wants to talk to us."
Bury police are investigating the circumstances of Azrar's
death.
A spokeswoman for Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS
Trust said: "The trust can confirm that there was a sudden and
unexpected death at the Edenfield Unit.
" For reasons of patient confidentiality, and whilst the trust is
assisting the police with their inquiries, we are unable to comment
further at this stage other than to offer the family our sincere
condolences."
