Death probe report due

DETECTIVES investigating how a convicted rapist came to die
after being restrained in a mental unit are preparing reports for
the Crown Prosecution Service and the Health and Safety Executive
after interviewing staff.
An inquest into the death of 24-year-old Azrar Ayub has been opened
and adjourned pending the completion of the police investigation
which has involved a second post mortem on the victim.
Detectives from Bury CID have interviewed staff at Prestwich
Hospital's high security wing where Mr Ayub was restrained by four
staff after becoming "unwell".
Sometime later he was said to have died in the wing's isolation
room.
The dead man was admitted to the hospital in November 2000 after he
raped a 21-year-old woman in his home town of Oldham. He was
serving an eight-year sentence and was ordered to be locked-up for
an indefinite period for treatment for schizophrenia and
paranoia.
Mr Ayub's brother Sarfraz say his death on 28 May this year was
"suspicious". He claimed that Azrar had spoken to him on the
morning of the 28th and seemed perfectly well.
When he identified his brother's body Sarfraz said severe bruising
and cuts were visible on his face.
He claims that all efforts to find out how his brother became
unwell and details of how he died have been blocked by health staff
and officials.
He has hired a lawyer to represent the family at any future
hearings on the death.
A spokesman for the coroner said a full inquest into the death
could not take place until the police investigation had been
completed and after the Crown Prosecution Service ruled on whether
anyone should face criminal charges.
Health chiefs at the Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental NHS Trust
say they cannot comment on the death for reasons of patient
confidentially and while police are investigating.
