Food was danger to health
31/ 8/2004
A shopkeeper has been fined £3,000 after trading standards
inspectors caught him selling out-of-date dairy products.
Mahboob Ashraf, who runs the Pennine Superstore in Higher Antley
Street, Accrington, was also ordered to pay £245 costs by Hyndburn
Magistrates for breaching food safety laws.
Ashraf, who failed to attend court, was charged with selling food
after it had passed its use by date following a routine inspection
by trading standards last November.
During the inspection of the premises, they discovered four items
in the refrigerator that gave them cause for concern.
These included fruit flavoured yoghurt drinks and desserts that
were still for sale despite being off.
One of the items, a six-pack of Mumtaz Rassmalai dessert was a
staggering 31-days out of date.
Principal officer for trading standards, Nick McNamara said Ashraf
had claimed during an interview that he did not know the stock was
out of date, as it was not his job to check that brand of
produce.
He left it to a representative from Mumtaz to replenish the stock
every four weeks, the court was told.
But Mr McNamara said the food was dangerous to human health.
