Inspectors ordered dangerous taxis off Oldham roads

16/ 9/2004

ONE-in-six cabbies stopped in spot checks in Oldham were driving vehicles so dangerous they are facing prosecution.
Council vehicle inspectors launched random checks one Friday evening stopping 33 taxis and private hire cars.
They found at least one defect in 28 of the vehicles.
All but five of the taxis were ordered off the road immediately. Six of them were judged to be in a dangerous state with steering, break and tyre faults.
Inspectors reported that some driver became abusive towards them claiming the checks were ruining business on a busy night.
Head of licencing for Oldham, Tony Allen said the results were "wholly unacceptable".
He added: "Drivers can take it from us that, until the condition checks on vehicles substantially improve, they can expect even more checks at even more frequent intervals."
