Plan will boost house prices

TWO massive regeneration plans are being drawn up for south
Manchester's districts.
The first plan, dubbed an inner strategic framework, will cover the
areas considered most in need of improvement nearer the city
centre.
These are Hulme, Moss Side, Rusholme, Longsight, north and south
Gorton and the parts of Ardwick outside the existing boundaries of
the New East Manchester regeneration area.
Many of these areas are set to benefit from at least £8m of housing
market renewal funding to boost flagging housing markets. This is a
scheme backed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister which
provides cash to knock down derelict houses and renovate badly
maintained properties in an effort to make the area more attractive
to buyers.
The second, outer framework, will cover those areas where there
have been pockets of housing which have enjoyed rising house prices
but still has areas of poor housing and real deprivation.
These include Whalley Range, Chorlton, Fallowfield, Withington,
Didsbury and Levenshulme.
The plans will be drawn up using research contained in a study
undertaken by Professor Brian Robson, of Manchester University's
Centre for Urban Policy Studies earlier this year.
Professor Robson's research found that parts of south Manchester,
with large Asian communities, continue to suffer from high levels
of unemployment with high levels of ill health, lone parent
families and people dependent on benefits.
