Rochdale Council pounce on pirate video trader

1/11/2004

A video shopkeeper who sold unauthorised copies of film recordings was ordered to carry out 120 hours community service by Rochdale Magistrates.
Thirty-seven-year-old Mohammed Farooq, of Milkstone Road, Rochdale, admitted 23 offences arising from video regulations.
The court was told that a trading standards officer visiting the shop in Milkstone Road came across the infringements of copyright and a large amount of material was surrendered and sent to the various counterfeit and copyright agencies of the film industry to confirm the breaches of the law.
On behalf of the defendant, Richard Birtwistle said the offences were the result of naivete rather than blatant dishonesty.
Farooq's first business venture of this kind had never realised a sufficient amount of profit and was virtually doomed to failure.
The business was now closed and the defendant was out of work.
"He was totally open and candid about the business and surrendered all the material," Mr Birtwistle pointed out.
