Shattered
29/11/2004
AN award winning chef who has been invited to meet Tony Blair
said his career could be ruined after a fall shattered his
elbow.
Farooq Ahmed said he now plans to sue the council after he fell on
a "treacherous" cobble street in Rochdale Town Centre.
Doctors have told Mr Ahmed, the north west curry chef of the year,
that he will be left with a stiff arm and may even get
arthritis.
Said Mr Ahmed, who runs the Veenas Restaurant in Heywood: "I use my
left arm to hold the pans while I cook, but with a stiff arm this
would be difficult to do. Both my arms are vital in the cooking
process, but now I could be ruined forever.
"I will be seeking legal advice to sue those responsible.
"I slipped on Cheetham Street. I've complained to friends many
times that its cobbled surface is dangerous especially when it's
wet. It was a accident waiting to happen."
The fall left him unconscious.
He said: "I woke up at spread Eagle pub. Passers by and the
landlady took me in. I didn't know where I was, all I could feel
was a shooting unbearable pain in my left arm.
"I couldn't even move my arm and I could tell that the elbow joint
must have become dislocated because the arm became floppy.
"An ambulance was called and I was operated on straightaway.
"Pins were put in to secure the elbow together. The doctor said I
was lucky because I could have ruined a nerve which would have left
my arm with no senses."
Mr Ahmed has been told it would take three months for his arm to
heal and will have to take time off work.
But he said he will try and keep his most important
engagements.
He said: "This month I still plan to meet Tony Blair and talk about
the work I've been doing with young people in my area. And Julie
Goodyear from Coronation Street will be having her last curry at
the restaurant before she goes to film a show called Celebrity Fit
Club. She's one of our regulars and wanted me to cook her a curry.
I will have to instruct a colleague to make the dish while I
supervise."
