Ignore these jinn quacks
29/11/2004
A LEADING Islamic scholar called on health experts in Manchester
to boycott advertisements by quack faith healers who exploit
mentally ill Asians.
Sardar Ahmed Qadri told a seminar organised by the British Ethnic
Health Awareness Foundation that greedy fake healers often
exploited the mentally ill by suggesting their condition was due to
jinns that they could exorcise.
He added that these unscrupulous exploiters often advertised in
local and national Asian newspapers and charged the gullible a
hefty fee for their services.
The meeting also heard from Blackburn consultant psychiatrist Dr
Waquas Waheed who said that suicide and self-harm among young Asian
women was prevalent and rising every year.
He said depressed young women were often sent back to their homes
where social isolation, domestic violence, cultural differences and
lack of understanding were the root causes of mental illness.
He called for more co-ordination between GPs and mental health
experts to tackle the problem.
