Mum’s agony as her ‘little fighter’ dies

A MUM said her world collapsed after her 13-month-old baby contracted pneumonia and died after an operation.
Safura Zulfqar, aged 19, paid tribute to "little fighter" Mahek, who was born with part of her oesophagus missing.
A tube was fitted to the baby's throat to help drain fluids, while a second was fitted in her stomach to allow the family to feed her.
Paediatricians at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, planned to use a piece of her bowel to bridge the gap in her oesophagus, a Stockport inquest heard. But they had to wait nearly a year to do the surgery.
Despite time in intensive care and having to be resuscitated, she was eventually allowed home.
But a month later, Safura noticed Mahek was drinking a lot of water.
"I went to check on her cot in the early hours and found her limp and not breathing," she said.
A post mortem examination revealed Mahek had contracted bronchial pneumonia. A verdict of death from natural causes was recorded.
Safura, of Whiteacre Road, Ashton under Lyne, said: "She thrived despite her problems. To look at her you wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong. She was my first child and we miss her lots."
