Eid arrests soar

29/11/2004

Greater Manchester Police recorded the largest number of arrests made over Eid 2004 for a number of years during the festivities on the city's famous 'curry mile'.
A total of 43 people were arrested during the Eid weekend - 38 on Sunday, the final night of celebrations.
Police say most of those detained were from outside the Greater Manchester area.
Twenty arrests were made for a variety of public order offences. These offenders were dealt with under the fixed penalty scheme, receiving a £80 fine.
Two people were arrested for setting off fireworks in crowds, causing a danger to pedestrians and road users.
A number of fireworks were also seized during the celebrations.
Four men were arrested for violent disorder following a disturbance in one of the restaurants on Wilmslow Road and two arrests were made for street crime offences.
The remaining arrests were made for drunk and disorderly behaviour and drink driving.
There was a heavy police presence along Wilmslow Road. This included traffic checks on main roads and side roads running into Wilmslow Road/Rusholme area.
The GMP aeroplane monitored the festivities.
Before the celebrations police asked revellers not to travel to Rusholme if they lived outside the Greater Manchester area.
The aim was to prevent hundreds of young men driving 'flash' hire cars up and down the curry mile to the cheers or jeers of onlookers. In the past the melee has degenerated into violence involving riot police.
The police commander for this Eid, Chief Inspector John Graves said: "Thanks to the hard work of many police officers and members of the local community the Eid celebrations passed peacefully and safely for the visitors.
"Although there were a number of arrests made throughout the festivities, the majority of offenders were from outside the local area from as far a-field as the West Midlands and Yorkshire.
"My message to these trouble causers who continue to travel to Rusholme from outside of the area remains the same; that those intent on causing trouble will be dealt with."
He added: "It is only a matter of months until the next Eid celebrations and GMP will be continuing to work closely with the local Muslim community to ensure that Eid-Ul-Adha is a safe and happy celebration for all its visitors."
