Funeral drinker abused Asians

17/12/2004

DRUNK after his grandmother's funeral a teenage boy left loose a torrent of racist filth against Asian neighbours.
His outburst and a bid to lash out at police cost 19-year-old Mark Anthony Cockerill an appearance before Rochdale magistrates.
He admitted racial aggravated threatening behaviour.
Prosecuting Claire Byers said after the funeral Cockerill, formerly of Rochdale, now of Pilkington Street, Warrington, shouted that he was going to sort those ..... Pakis out and continued a tirade of racially insulting language.
On his behalf Steve Connor said Cockerill was a man of previous good behaviour and was not a racist.
He had come back to his home-town for his grandmother's funeral, had drunk a lot and become emotional. He had suddenly been told his sister was being assaulted and believing the perpetrator was Asian let loose the "unpleasant and unforgivable" torrent of hateful language.
Cockerill lashed out at police when they arrived but the punch did not connect.
He told the court such an incident would never happen again.
He was given a 12 month conditional discharge and told to pay £34 in court costs.
