Scrapyard boss was professional criminal

A CAR scrapyard boss has been jailed for two years after most of
the vehicles at his business were found to be stolen.
Mohammed Nazir, aged 53, who owned Manchester Auto Salvage on Upper
Camp Street, Salford, was described by Judge Barry Woodward at
Manchester Crown Court as a "professional criminal" involved in
organised crime.
Investigations found 20 out of 26 vehicles at the scrapyard were
stolen and ranged in value from £300 to £20,000.
Two had been obtained from their owners in carjackings and another
two in "hook and cane" burglaries where the keys of high powered
cars are obtained by thieves using poles through the owners' letter
boxes.
The court heard that the total value of the stolen vehicles was
£127,000. Nazir, of Kelverlow Street, Oldham, had admitted 20
charges of handling stolen goods at an earlier hearing.
Trading standards officers became suspicious when during a visit
they heard the sound of voices and hammering coming from a
padlocked workshop, which had steel shutters down.
Inside was a mint condition Toyota Corolla with its wheels and body
panels removed. It had been stolen from Whitefield, Bury four days
earlier. When first asked to open the workshop by the officers
Nazir was evasive and changed the subject.
He eventually produced keys and opened it to reveal two men working
on the car which was being dismantled although it was not damaged
at all.
The trading standards officers who had called to help Nazir sort
out his yard's registration called the police after the men working
on the car fled.
A proceeds of crime hearing will be held in March next year.
