How it happened
29/12/2004
THE EARTHQUAKE occurred close to the island of Sumatra,.when at 8am local time on Boxing Day, a violent rupture occurred on the sea floor along a fault about 1,000km long.
The quake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale, the strongest in the world for at least 40 years, wreaking havoc across the whole region.
It generated a massive tsunami, or sea surge, which then fanned out across the Indian Ocean at enormous speed - up to 500 kilometres per hour.
As it moved towards land and to shallower waters, the speed of the wave slowed down, but it built in size to become giant walls of water, tens of metres high.
These then slammed into coastal areas thousands of miles apart, destroying great swathes of lands and sweeping away anything and anyone in its path.
