Mountain of help on its way

19/10/2005

A MOUNTAIN of money, blankets and clothes has been donated by Cheadle Muslims to support victims of the Pakistan earthquake.

More than £20,000 was raised by the Cheadle Muslim Association and donated to Manchester's fundraising dinner on Friday, and a huge goods container carrying the Association's name rapidly filled up outside the Cheadle Mosque on Wilmslow Road.

Asad Zaman, head of community affairs for the association, said he was delighted with the hundreds of bags of blankets, clothes and even tents donated so quickly by local people.

He said: "The response has been overwhelming, people emptied out their wardrobes and donated even new clothing. We have filled the container - which would have easily contained the full contents of a house - in two weeks and now it is on its way to Pakistan. It is nice to know that survivors will know where the aid came from."
