Curry came with cockroach

A LIVE cockroach in the poppadoms has caused one of Manchester's most famous Asian families a second blow.
A diner got the cockroach fright at the Shere Khan restaurant in
Rusholme, Manchester, part of the Awan family's £30M curry
empire.
The restaurant was visited soon after by food safety inspectors and
was found to be infested with insects.
Nighat Awan, OBE, wife of the Shere Khan founder, is director of
the firm and was named Asian businesswoman of the year in 2002.
Inspectors were called to the restaurant, on Rusholme's famous
"curry mile", last December, and found the Wilmslow Road premises
were infested with the insects and filthy with dirt and grease,
Manchester magistrates heard.
The chain, which was fined £30,000 for similar problems at its
Trafford Centre outlet in May, admitted eight breaches of food
safety law.
The court heard that live insects were found on sacks of rice and
crawling across the floor, a "soup of grease, dirt and food debris"
oozed between joints on the floor, equipment was dirty, a plate
rack was rusted, chopping boards were encrusted with old food and
there were no washing or drying materials, which indicated that
employees did not use the facility.
Jonathan Evans, prosecuting, said that the situation was so serious
that they warned the owners that they would shut the restaurant
unless they volunteered to do so themselves, which they did.
Within five days of the visit most of the problems had been
tackled.
Barry Holland, for Shere Khan Restaurants, said: "They let their
normal high standards slip.
"They did have experts trying to deal with the pest infestation.
Some of the recommendations had already been adhered to, and
attempts were being made to tackle the situation, but some of the
work was not due to start until the January."
He added: "The restaurant is part of a big group and the senior
management's eye was taken off the ball with the day-to-day
handling of the business in the hands of those who were not up to
the job."
Mr Holland said staffing changes had been made and a new managing
director was in place who had immediately authorised spending of
£30,000 on putting problems right so that the restaurant could
re-open.
Magistrates said they had imposed the maximum possible fine of
£5,000 on each of the eight offences.
The Shere Khan restaurant chain is owned by the Awan family, and
director Nighat Awan was named Asian businesswoman of the year four
years ago. She was also awarded an OBE in 2004.
The company recently announced plans to open up to ten outlets in
the Middle East, and also produces a range of curry sauces and
products for the UK retail and export markets.
