Radio station that wants to put you on air

A LOCAL broadcaster is once again appealing to the public for their help in running a community radio station.

The popular Mashal Radio is to hit the airwaves during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan for the eighth successive year.

Mahboob Kakrvi, station founder and Coppice resident, wants members of the public to come on board and help make this year's broadcast even bigger and better than ever before.

And the station hopes to do a lot more than just celebrate Ramadan with ambitions to create dialogue and build bridges between the various communities of Oldham.

Mr Kakrvi (pictured) told the Advertiser: "This year I'm asking different representatives from other religions to come along and talk about how we can improve relationships between different faiths.

"I'm hoping it will be another successful year this time. It's a station for the community and without the community's help one man can't do it alone."

The station, based on Werneth Hall Road, will broadcast for 32 days on 106.7fm and be streamed live over the internet 24 hours a day. Featured programmes will be in a range of languages including English, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali and Paharri, covering a range of topics and community issues by experienced presenters who all live locally.

A launch ceremony will take place on Monday, September 10 before Mashal - which means 'light' in Persian - goes live on September 13.
