TWO of Cheshire’s brightest young local stars have been making a big impact at their clubs with some stunning displays.
Bramhall Golf Club’s 12-year-old prodigy Bronte Law is already one of the top-ranked girls in her age group in the country and was runner-up in the Cheshire Girls championships at Disley.
She has represented her club and county in many top competitions as the three-handicapper looks to make the coveted scratch mark this season.
And officials at her club are now looking at the ladies course record at the club to see if Law has set a new mark as she scorched round in the competition for Mr Captain’s Prize, posting a superb 72-3=69 winning score.
It left her four shots clear of Fiona Kelsall and Ali Hicks to win division one.
In division two, Avril Hill was out on her own with 71, four shots clear of Liz Jones and Margaret Birtles.
Over at Reddish Vale, their 13-year-old starlet Abbie Cowlard, who has also enjoyed success with Cheshire Girls, is continuing to make a big impression.
Cowlard has been a key member of the ladies MDLGA Bell Cup team, who have reached the last 16 of the top North West team competition, with a 100 per cent record in her matches.
She has also won three club competitions, including the ‘major’ B and B Trophy.
Her first win came in an LGU medal for the County Prize where her nett 70 saw her home from Lady Captain Anne Gosling (71) and Barbara Lee (75).
Then in the first round of the B and B Trophy, Cowlard was a clear winner, posting another 70 to win from Anne Gosling (74) and Karen Cunliffe (77).
And she clinched the B and B trophy win by carding a 68, which reduced her handicap to 11 and saw her home from Kirsty Radcliffe (70) and Karen Cunliffe (77).
Vale’s men played for the President’s Prize over two rounds and John Basing and Barry Cocksey set the early pace with 38 points from Phil Houghton and Martin Boocock (37).
In round two it was close with Jeremy Atkins, Pete Martin and Phil Houghton leading in with 40.
The President’s Prize went to Boocock on 75, from Jeremy Atkins, Derek Wilson and Phil Houghton (all 74).
Gatley’s men also played for the President’s Prize over 36 holes and Scott Keelan eased home with 69+70=139 to win from Roger Corlett and Phil Cooke (both 140).
A midweek medal at Disley saw Matt Hill win a count back on 68 from Peter Holland and John Potter.
There was a full field of 150 for the Seniors Open at Mellor and Townscliffe, and completing a remarkable hat-trick of wins were homester Dave Allcock and his partner Bob Spence from Hazel Grove with a superb 44 points.
Bramall Park ladies played for the GB Carr Bowl and in division one Cathy Tate was out on her own with 71 from Cathy Mould (74) and Heather Todd (75).
Josephine Greenwood led in division two with 73, and in division three Kerris Russell was first past the post with 75 from Jean Marshall (76).
Heaton Moor’s men played for the Ralph Harrison Trophy and it went to C Harrison with his 64 seeing him past the post from M Line (65) and P Massey (66), with Steve Prinn having the best gross of 68.
The Coronation Cup at Houldsworth was won by Michael Fenton on +5 from Steve Bell and Alan Norton (both +4).
Wednesday action at Houldsworth had Graham Davies winning a medal after a card play-off on 68 from Dave Moss and Paul Waldron.
