Soccer Aid raises funds to help poor and needy

7/ 1/2008

Rochdale based inter-faith group Deen For All held a successful charity five-a-side football tournament and raised over £600.

The event was held at Soccer village where all three indoor football courts had to be used because of the large number of teams that had entered.

From the early rounds Bilal All stars from Rochdale looked clear favorites to win. They won their group of six matches averaging five goals per match. The eventual winners, FC Sona from Oldham began slowly. Having lost their first match to Wardleworth FC 5-0, their inspirational manager Imran Khan urged them to play without fear.

That led to FC Sona finishing second in their group and thus qualifying. Real Deeplish lost two of their opening group matches, but scraped through winning three of their final four group games.

The semi finals saw the match of the tournament.

Pre tournament favourites Bilal All Stars dominated possession. However, they were hit by two counter attacking goals by FC Sona. At the final whistle, realising the significance of this win, FC Sona celebrated their 2-1.

In the other semi final Real Deeplish were taken to the final minute in their narrow one-nil win over Wardleworth FC.

In the final, it was clear FC Sona confidence was sky high after their semi final win. That confidence led to FC Sona racing to a three-goal lead. Real Deeplish towards the end of play pulled a consolation goal back.

As a further consolation, Real Deeplish were also awarded fair play trophy for their honesty and goodwill towards others team. The organisers felt a special award ought to be made for their excellent conduct both on and off the pitch. Young Zahid Ali of Oldham won the player of the tournament award.

Said delighted manager of FC Sona: "These lads are from Glodwick. Oldham. There is not much there. We do this to keep them off the streets and away from drugs and crime. We never expected ourselves to win this tournament. Now I got a happy bunch of players and we also made new friends. Deen for All has done an excellent job. Thank you to all concerned."

Director of fundraising for Deen For All, Nawaz Moin said: "In 2007 Deen For All raised £1500 for good causes. With this tournament being after Christmas and Eid, the aim was to raise £300-500. However, everyone from participants to sponsors dug deep and we raised over 600 pounds."
