Asif rains supreme with the bat

3/ 5/2008

A NEW Armstrongs Saddleworth and District season opened on Sunday in time-honoured fashion, with plenty of rain.

Droylsden’s match with Uppermill was called off because of the weather, and Saddleworth’s game against Shaw was a non-starter.

Bamford Fieldhouse, last season’s champions, entertained Austerlands and managed some play before being beaten by the rain.

Greenfield (117 all out) were beaten by Hollinwood (120 for 3). Hollinwood’s stand-in professional Asif Iqbal scored 53 not out.

Top individual score of the day came from Friarmere’s Zafar Iqbal who scored 136 in their total of 187 for 4.

Heyside passed that score for the loss of the same number of wickets, thanks to Steven Firth (88) and professional Roelof Hugo (66 not out).

Moorside professional Alan Durose took six Glodwick wickets for 18 runs in his team’s home win.

Today: Austerlands v Greenfield; Bamford Fieldhouse v Shaw; Friarmere v Moorside; Hollinwood v Droylsden; Saddleworth v Stayley; Uppermill v Heyside.

Tomorrow: Droylsden v Austerlands; Glodwick v Friarmere; Heyside v Hollinwood; Moorside v Uppermill; Shaw v Greenfield; Stayley v Bamford.
