Hitting back

SALFORD trainer Oliver Harrison has set the record straight after being the victim of an unjust verbal attack from rising British boxing star Amir Khan.

Falsely believing that his former trainer had offered north Manchester’s Michael Gomez tactical tips in the build up to Saturday’s televised fight, Khan lambasted Harrison for his supposed lack of morals.

But Harrison, who trained Khan at his Pendleton gym for three years, told the Advertiser that he did not betray Khan’s confidence despite the cold way that he was sacked in April.

Harrison, who was informed of his shock sacking via a letter passed under his door, said: "Amir knows full well that a million and one boxers come in here. It doesn’t mean I’m training them. They come with their trainers to use the facilities.

"Gomez already has a trainer so why would I train him? That rumour was completely untrue."

Three-time British champion Gomez, who was stopped by Commonwealth Lightweight champion and former Olympic silver medalist Khan in a five-round thriller in Birmingham, has revealed that he started the rumour about Harrison giving him pre-fight advice to wind Khan up.

He said: "I started the rumour and, obviously, it worked."

Khan did not mince his words when speaking about his former mentor’s supposed link up with Gomez.

Khan may be a class act inside the ring but he showed little class outside of it when he said: "You definitely lose the respect for a coach because it’s only been two months since the split with me and he goes and does something like that.

"Top coaches would never do that so it shows what kind of person he is.

"I thought we split on good terms but there was no communication.

"For him to do that I don’t mind as he’s a coach and he can coach anyone. To have someone like Oliver telling Gomez is fine. I didn’t learn anything from Oliver in the way of defence whereas with Dean Powell (Khan’s new trainer) I’ve learnt a lot defensively."s

Khan is trying to "run" before he learns to walks. Big mistake to "kick" out his last trainer Oliver Harrison. What Khan needs is a good NEW team of Management, amateur and non professionals are doing Khan more harm than good. Two recent knock downs in the ring shows there is a long way to go to be the "best".
