Khan looks to Cuba

24/ 7/2008

AMIR Khan has been strongly linked with Cuban trainer Jorge Rubio Agramonte as he seeks the man to take him into world class.

The 21-year-old Bolton fighter is now back in Britain after a trip to the US in which he met the four men on his shortlist to replace Salford's Oliver Harrison, from whom Khan split in April.

The surprise name on the list is Rubio, who made his name as coach of the Cuban national boxing team. He worked with Mario Kindelan, the brilliant amateur star who beat Khan in the 2004 Olympic final.

Khan is also believed to have met top professional trainers Roger Mayweather, Buddy McGirt and Freddie Roach. But Rubio would be a real surprise. He is now a professional trainer based in Miami and has no star names on his books.

The new trainer is expected to be named this week and he will come to this country to help the unbeaten lightweight prepare for his Commonwealth title defence at the M.E.N. Arena on September 6.

Meanwhile, Joe Calzaghe's super-fight with US legend Roy Jones Jr has been postponed after the Welshman suffered a hand injury in training.

The pair had been due to meet in a light-heavyweight bout at Madison Square Garden, New York, in September in potentially the 36-year-old's final fight.

It is understood Calzaghe suffered the injury while hitting a heavy punchbag but it is not thought to be career threatening.
