Kick off and kick out

ROCHDALE Football Club gave racism the red card during a friendly clash between the home team and Rushden and Diamonds FC.

The game was part of a national 'Kick Racism Out of Football' week where many organisation in the North West staged events to give communities a clear message that racism will not be tolerated in sport.

Rochdale FC had given away 1,000 free tickets to local youngsters to come and watch the clash which ended in a 0-0 draw. Face painters were also around during the day keeping young children entertained.

Said club secretary, Hilary Dearden: "We couldn't have asked for better support from the local community and all the youngsters."

Oldham Athletic worked with local schools alongside Oldham Council to make their 'unity in the community" day at Boundary Park a great success. Two children from each of the 60 primary schools in the town lead Athletic and opponents Bristol City onto the pitch wearing anti-racist T-shirts.

Tameside sport development unit did their bit with a six-a-side football tournament aimed at bringing local communities together This was accompanied by a drive to encourage soccer coaching within the Asian community.
