Soapies slam stars

SOCCER mad youth from Oldham clashed with soap stars and ex-pro
footballers in a high scoring charity match.
The aim of the game dubbed the Asian All-Star Xl vs Celebrity Dream
Team was to raise funds for the cash-strapped Latics.
The celebs included Marcus Patrick and Alex Carter (Ben and Lee in
Hollyoaks) and Ian Dowie, Andy Ritchie and Neil Tolson who are
ex-Latics professionals.
The Asian All-Star Xl including players from Shajalal Unity, Red
Star Bengals, Westwood Wanderers and FC Paris.
The first half of the match saw the celebrity team gain the upper
hand with a hat trick of goals.
In the second half the Asian All-Stars played a stronger game and
almost pulled level. But the stars and ex-pros hung on and finished
6-5 ahead.
Michael Le Vell (Coronation Street's Kevin Webster) presented the
trophies which, were sponsored by Urban Spice Buyers.
Over a £1000 was raised during the event.
Latics community cohesion officer Abdul Basit said the event was so
successful he is now in talks with Manchester United to get a match
organised with the Asian All-Stars Xl and a Reds team.
He said: "I knew the event would be successful but I was
overwhelmed with the response.
"We were expecting 500 people but over a 1000 turned up for the
event. There were many Asian and white young people in the crowds
supporting both teams.
"To top it off we had a Bangla band who played live music
throughout the match.
"The event gave young Asian players the chance to be spotted by
Latics scouts and already three young people have been picked for
trials.
"If we could get a match with Manchester United we could further
raise the profile of Asian footballers."
