Asia youngsters beat all comers

THE North West's leading Asian footballing organisation has
scored another stunning success at a key tournament.
Rochdale-based Asia FC travelled to Merseyside to take on crack UK
Asian sides and proved that they were the best in the under-16
class.
Not only did the under-16s come a way with the trophy, three of the
six-a-side squad clinched trials with a handful of professional
clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Bolton
Wanderers.
Other Asia FC sides at the tournament, which was supported by
special guest and former international John Barnes, did not do so
well, though the Asian FC squad in the open age category was only
kept from the quarter final spot goal average.
The other local team to make a mark was Glodwick Dynamos from
Oldham. Their striker Wahid Asif was top scorer of the entire
tournament.
Asia FC coach Sajid Maqbool said he was delighted by the under-16s
performance: "They were by far the best side in the final and it
was only a matter of time before they took the lead.
"It is great that scouts are taking a serious interest in Asian
players. It brings the inevitable Asian break-through into
professional football significantly nearer."
John Barnes added his support: "There is still a desperate lack of
ethnic minority people at the games top level, be it players or
administrators. I am delighted to see people are tying to tackle
this and create an environment where we can expect to see Asian and
other ethnic minority role models in the near future."
Talks will now be held over the coming months to develop an Asian
Football Academy in Liverpool.
