Asians urged take the plunge

THE Tameside health and sports trust have joined forces to encourage Asians to take the plunge and go swimming.
Separate classes are going to be held for men and women at Ashton swimming baths where Asians can learn how to swim, keep fit in Aqua exercise classes and enjoy lane swimming. Play sessions will also be held for children.
The initiative was taken up by the Tameside Primary Care Trust and the Tameside Sports Trust who are trying to encourage Asians to increase their physical activity to help reduce health problems including diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
Blinds have also been purchased for the windows at the baths to ensure complete privacy.
An important part of the project is to recruit local Asians into courses to teach them to become lifeguards and pool attendants and also to become swimming teachers.
Said Asian diabetes support co-ordinator Abdul Salam: "Swimming is a great form of exercise but not enough Asians take it up especially people suffering from health problems.
"We hope by setting up separate classes for men and women, more people will attend.
"We are also keen on recruiting Asian people to become lifeguards and swimming teachers. You need to be a reasonably good swimmer to become a lifeguard but if you enjoy swimming, even if you aren't particularly good, you can become a swimming teacher.
